The monument was built as a memorial to the struggle once experienced by the Balinese people against the Dutch colonials during the war. The Dutch then aimed to invade and occupy the island.

The Bajra Sandhi monument stands on the public park of Niti Mandala Renon, which the locals also call Puputan Park. The green park of the Puputan Square is a favorite place of the locals, mainly as a daily exercise spot.

The name Bajra Sandhi is derived from the words Bajra and Sandhi. The word Bajra means Bell, regarding the shape of the monument which resembles the Holy Bell used by Balinese Hindu priests in performing mantras during sacred holy ceremonies, while Sandhi means holy. The architectural design of the Bajra Sandhi reflects traditional Balinese design, with unique carvings and sculptures within the corners of the monument.

The uniqueness of the Bajra Sandhi’s shape resembles a pagoda, which may attract Asian tourists to visit the monument. So, don’t be surprised to see tourists from South Korea, Japan, and India. The landmark is also a favorite spot for engagement photoshoots, also known as pre-wedding photography.

Bajra Sandhi is opened daily but closed on government holidays. Therefore, speak with your guide or hotel concierge for more information. You should also note the opening hours – Mondays to Fridays from 8:30 to 16:30 while at weekends from 10:00 to 16:30. The entry fee to the monument is IDR 50,000 for adults and IDR 25,000 for children 17 years of age and below. There is no entry for the public park.
